Now, I think that in a discussion with Mike I finally got the the root of the question what’s wrong about current CMS systems. On the one hand, you have the big players, such as Red Dot and even bigger ones. They charge an arm and a leg for licencing and claim to be just about doing everything. Now, as a developer they still suck. If you know what you want and how easily you can often times achieve just that, without having to squeeze your idea into the corset of such a system, it can be frustrating to be forced to work with such. On the other hand there are open source systems such as Joomla or Typo3. I think the verdict is out on Typo3, that the usability just sucks. Both systems have the problem that they still are rather limited when trying to implement very custom features and/or applications. But even the pricey systems have that problem. And why? Because they all claim that they are able to handle any problem and be this 100% alround tool.
Well, I disagree, as well as do at least 2 of my former co-CMS-developers, that this really isn’t what I need as a developer. Especially not in every day agency work. A CMS is what it’s name says: A Content Management System. And that’s that. It doesn’t need to be supporting all kinds of extras and especially not any front end display issues. It shouldn’t even dictate the technology that should be used for that.
I want a system, that clearly seperates the layers. I want to define the data structure and it should be able to generate some basic environment from those settings. A little like Rails’ scaffolding feature. Then it needs the most important part, a smart business logic layer. Support plugins, etc. Keep the features limited and make things like publishing schedules optional plugins. Build a Content Management System. Keep it open and clean, which requires a great concept and specification to begin with. This business logic layer allows the editor to fill his system with the information necessary, in a — very importantly — clean environment. In interfaces less is more. Don’t dump every option possible on that usually just half IT-savvy guy.
Finally, we don’t want to have to deal with front end programming here. I want an clean, well defined and smart interface to query retrieve my objects from- Then I want to be able to use any sort of technology to display the objects I just derived: Be it PHP, .NET, Java, ColdFusion, Flash, … hell, even Desktop or remote applications can be supported.
From what I have seen, there are some sort of “Database modelling” tools already out there — like Strg.at’s “spunQ” — and they work! But what I would like to have is something, that is more tailored to the needs of an editor, who just wants a clean and pretty much “self explanatory” interface. The second focus is on the developer: All they have left to do is
- set up the data structure
- retrieve the objects and build a front end on top of them
- write applications to weave in (optional)

So gerne ich die “Schocker” von Chuck Palahniuk lese, so enttäuschend war dieser Versuch von — der von mir an und für sich sehr verehrten — Charlotte Roche. Die ersten Seiten sind noch aufregend und manchmal will man fast erröten, doch spätestens ab Seite 30 wird das ganze doch etwas monoton. Klar, immer wieder mal kam eine Stelle, an der sogar mir aufgrund Ekelgefühls unwohl wurde, aber das macht ein Buch für mich jetzt nicht lesenswert. Themen wie fehlende Intimhygiene und diverse medizinische Sachverhalte über die man beim Essen normalerweise nicht reden würde, Fäkalangelegenheiten bis hin zu Selbstverletzung werden detailliert seziert. Bis Seite 100 hab ich’s durchgehalten, dann hab ich mir die Audioversion besorgt, um mir den neuen Arbeitsalltag damit zu unterhalten. Nur leider war das der nächste Fehler: Charlotte, du warst immer so unterhaltsam als Moderatorin, aber als Vorlesetante musst du wirklich noch üben. Das Audiobook ist noch einschläfernder als das Schriftwerk.
Den Medienhype kann ich jetzt im nachhinein echt nicht verstehen. Ist unser Kulturraum wirklich noch so verkrampft, als dass ein ordinäres Buch eines B-Promis solch Aufsehen erregt?
Leider muss ich zusammenfassend sagen, dass das Cover ist noch das Erwähnenswerteste an dem ganzen Buch ist; und hätte ich mir “mein” Exemplar nicht ausgeborgt, so gäb’s jetzt eines zu verschenken.

Nun ja, nachdem Kollege Broder gestern im Club 2 zum Thema “Karikaturen, Bin Laden, Irak - Der Krieg der Worte und Bilder” gewettert hat und ich in der Wiener U-Bahn wenige Stunden zuvor dieses Büchlein endlich zu Ende gebracht hatte, will ich hier kurz meine Rezension zum besten geben:
Im allgemeinen bin ich ja bekanntlich der letzte, der sich mit “political correctness, all the time” brüstet. Aber dieses Werk ist selbst mir zeitweise zu polemisch. So witzig Broder’s Analogien zum Thema “Islamismus und wie sich der Westen in Geiselhaft nehmen lässt” auch oft sein mögen, so sehr ist mir doch spätestens ab der Mitte des Buches die “Suderei” zunehmend auf die Nerven gegangen. Alles in allem hätte man die Grundaussagen von “Hurra, wir kapitulieren”, anstatt der mageren 166 Seiten, auch auf 50 untergebracht.
Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt — für den der Autor allerdings wenig kann — ist die idiologische Gratwanderung. Es werden viele wichtige und berechtigte Fragen gestellt und aufgeworfen. Aus dem Kontext gerissen, werden viele der Aussagen von Henryk M. Broder allerdings potentiell zu gefährlichen Geschützen in den Steinschleudern von rechts-rechten Reaktionären und Jungnazis.
Die wichtigste — wenngleich vergeblich um Antwort suchende — Frage, die der “Spiegel” Journalist stellt ist jene, wieviel Toleranz einer intoleranten Bewegung entgegengebracht werden darf. Wieviel Toleranz gegenüber den Entwicklungen in Deutschland hätten die Alliierten Anfang der 1930er Jahre wirklich akzeptieren sollen? “Gegen Appeasement” ist wohl die Quick-Summary dieses Buches.

“The Scientist”-cover by Avril Lavigne… while I am not too fond of her, this is a pretty version… and it played in the weirdest moment tonite.
It’s on “Radio 1’s Live Lounge Volume 2″ - isoHunt and torrents.to are your friends… there are many great versions on this one. My favorites (apart from the Coldplay cover above) are “Girlfriend” by the Pigeon Detectives (Avril Lavigne cover), “Rehab” by Paolo Nutini (Amy Winehouse cover) and “500 Miles” by Maximo Park (The Proclaimers cover).
[update]After finally listening to the other disc, KT Tunstall’s “The Prayer” (Bloc Party cover) took the #1 spot for “most awesome track” on this compilation.[/update]
since i am currently in a process of completely rewriting the code of emocide (also got a new subname for it) in the next weeks/couple of months not all too much is going to change/be updated, to provide data consistency.
mainly i will be interviewing for jobs anyway, which is less than exciting to write about…
